August NPD Software and Hardware Sales

Nintendo remained on top with the two best selling consoles. The two consoles combined to sell nearly 787,000 units.

This marks the 10th consecutive month in which the Wii (#1 – 403,600) and DS (#2 – 383,300) have held the top two spots on the chart, and the second in a row in which the Wii overtook the DS.

The data, released by the NPD Group, also shows that, once again, the two Nintendo systems managed to outsell the combined figures of the Microsoft Xbox 360 (#3–276,700), Sony PS2 (#4–202,000), Sony PSP (#5–151,200) and the Sony PS3 (#6-130,600). That’s 786,900 (856,400 when you include the Nintendo GBA) vs. 760,300.

In the race between the Xbox 360 and the PS3, the 360 came out ahead. While the PS3 showed up somewhat stronger than usual in July thanks in large part to its $100 price clearance, the 360 price cut was much more successful, allowing for the system to sell through an additional 106,700 consoles, the only console in the charts to increase month-to-month. The PS3 on the other hand declined by 17.9% back to its usual last place (among next-gen consoles) position on the chart. It’ll be interesting to see if the price cut continues to fuel increased sales for the 360.

The Game Boy Advance is finally beginning to show its age, and what happens when software is no longer produced for a system, as it sold 69,500 units (#7) in the month.
