The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up the film rights to the anime classic Robotech, and Tobey Maquire, whose Maquire Entertainment company will be producing the film, may be eying the lead role.
Maguire had the following to say about the pick up:
“We are very excited to bring ‘Robotech’ to the big screen,” Maguire said. “There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film.”
Like the announcement of Voltron before this (related story here), the success of the DreamWorks/Paramount Transformers, which has raked in more than $310 million domestically and over $685 million worldwide, is likely one of the contributing factors to studios willingness to bring these robot-based projects to the big screen.
