Big 10 Network Kicks Off Thursday, But Few Able to Watch August 29, 2007 2:57 pm

The new Big 10 Network will telecast its first game tomorrow (Thursday, August 30), but with only one major provider carrying the network (DirecTV), and no major cable operator signed up yet, many fans will not be able to watch coverage of their favorite college teams.
The dispute comes from the network’s desire for cable operators to place the channel on the basic tier. Cable operators are against that approach because they feel the added cost of $1.10 per subscriber would be unfairly, so they say, passed to their customers. Their proposal would be to place the network on a sports tier, which costs customers an extra fee.
For its part, DirecTV is taking advantage of the situation. The satellite operator is planning an agreesive advertising campaign to get cable customers to drop their provider and switch to DirecTV.
