Russian-born actor Anton Yelchin has been cast as Pavel Chekov, navigator of the USS Enterprise, for the upcoming film Star Trek.
The actor, who is only 18 years of age, is the third announced castmember (he’s in final negotiations) for the 11th film in the Star Trek franchise, joining Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who will both portray the role of Mr. Spock. Additional casting is under way in multiple locations for the characters of Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, the film’s villian and perhaps, the character of Pike.
Yelchin’s prior credits include the short-lived Showtime drama Huff and can currently be seen playing the lead role in the film Charlie Bartlett.
Exucutive produced by J.J. Abrams, with a screenplay penned by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, Star Trek will hit theaters on December 25, 2008.
