Broadcast TV Ratings for Friday, July, 20, 2007

NBC takes the evening among households and viewers, but has to share a tie for first among adults 18-49 with The CW. ABC’s Set for Life premieres poorly, while Jericho remains low.

NBC finished in first place for the evening with a 3.3/7 household rating and 4.84 million viewers but was tied for first among adults 18-49 with a 1.4/5 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • 3.5/7 HH Rating [#1]
    • 5.02M viewers [#1]
    • 1.3/5 A18-49 rating [#t2]
  • Another evening of repeats on NBC was able to keep the network in first place for the night among households and viewers, and a tie for the night with The CW among adults 18-49. However, all programs were off slightly from the week prior.
  • 8:00 p.m.: A repeat of 1 vs. 100 (3.1/6 HH rating, 4.62M viewers, 1.4/6 A18-49 rating).
  • 9:00 p.m.: A repeat of Las Vegas (3.0/6 HH rating, 4.57M viewers, 1.0/4 A18-49 rating).
  • 10:00 p.m.: A repeat of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (3.8/8 HH rating, 5.34M viewers, 1.4/5 A18-49 rating).

CBS followed in second place for the evening with a 3.1/6 household rating and 4.48 million viewers, but was far back in fourth among adults 18-49 with a 1.1/4 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • 2.7/5 HH rating [#t3]
    • 4.07M viewers [#4]
    • 1.3/5 A18-49 [#5]
  • 8:00 p.m.: A repeat of Ghost Whisperer (3.4/7 HH rating, 4.81M viewers, 1.2/5 A18-49 rating) returned to give CBS a much needed boost in the 8:00 p.m. hour after last week’s failed repeat by Jericho. The hour was up by insanely large amounts (1.84 million viewers or 62%, 62% among households and a whopping 100% among adults 18-49).
    • Last week’s numbers (Return to Jericho-REPEAT):
      • Households – 2.1/4
      • Viewers – 2.97M
      • Adults 18-49 – 0.6/3
  • 9:00 p.m.: That was followed by a repeat of Jericho (2.4/5 HH rating, 3.52M viewers, 0.8/3 A18-49 rating), which was the 13th episode of the season. The show seems to have bottomed out, posting slightly higher numbers than the week prior. It’s too hard to predict whether these repeats will help or have no effect on the ratings for the new season. One thing for sure though is that the series is definitely a weak link on the evening, hampering ratings for its lead-out (more on that below).
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 3.2/6 to 2.4/4 to 2.4/5
      • Viewers – 4.75M to 3.24M to 3.52M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.1/4 to 0.7/3 to 0.8/3
  • 10:00 p.m.: A repeat of Numb3rs (3.4/6 HH rating, 5.12M viewers, 1.2/4 A18-49 rating) remained lower than usual, but improved fairly dramatically from its lead-in, obviously indicating that the audience is changing the channel when Jericho comes on, and returning back to CBS for Numb3rs (to be fair, this was a problem during the fall season on the network as well, with Close to Home usually losing A18-49 audience from its lead-in).

ABC finished in third place for the evening with a 2.7/5 household rating, was fourth among viewers with 3.77 million and back up to third among adults 18-49 with a 1.2/4 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • 2.8/5 HH rating [#3]
    • 3.95M viewers [#3]
    • 1.3/5 A18-49 rating [#t2]
  • 8:00 p.m.: It’s safe to say that the series premiere of Set for Life (2.8/6 HH rating, 4.06M viewers, 1.0/5 A18-49 rating) flopped, only marginally improving upon last week’s back-to-back repeats of George Lopez (and actually off slightly among adults 18-49).
  • 9:00 p.m.: A repeat of ABC Family’s new series Greek (1.6/3 HH rating, 2.19M viewers, 0.8/3 A18-49 rating) fell off hard from last week (560,000 viewers, or 20% across the board). It’s highly doubtful ABC will continue airing episodes of the series in this timeslot, as it doesn’t seem to have helped the show during its first-run airings on ABC Family (The numbers for first two episodes of the show on ABC Family are included below.
    • Last week’s numbers (Re-broadcast of series premiere):
      • Households – 2.0/4 to 1.6/3
      • Viewers – 2.75M to 2.19M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.0/4 to 0.8/3
    • ABC Family Numbers:
      • Households – 0.8/1 to 0.8/1
      • Viewers – 1.06M to 1.16M
      • Adults 18-49 – 0.4/1 to 0.4/1
  • 10:00 p.m.: 20/20 (3.7/7 HH rating, 5.08M viewers, 1.6/6 A18-49 rating) seemed to have been hurt slightly from its reduced lead-in, but was still able to post the evenings highest rating among adults 18-49.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 4.0/8 to 3.7/7
      • Viewers – 5.60M to 5.08M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.8/6 to 1.6/6

The CW followed in fourth place for the evening with a 2.6/5 household rating, but was third among viewers with 4.30 million and managed a tie for first place on the evening among adults 18-49 with a 1.4/5 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • 2.7/5 HH rating [#t3]
    • 4.07M viewers [#2]
    • 1.4/6 A18-49 rating [#1]
  • 8:00-10:00 p.m.: Friday Night Smackdown! (2.6/5 HH rating, 4.30M viewers, 1.4/5 A18-49 rating) remained strong, growing nicely from the week prior (note: fast nationals were lower for last week, and increased when the finals were released. This has happened many times, so expect the numbers to decrease when finals are released). The strong performance meant another first place finish on the evening among adults 18-49, albeit this one was shared with NBC.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 2.5/5 to 2.6/5
      • Viewers – 3.82M to 4.30M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.4/5 to 1.4/5

FOX finished in fifth place for the evening with a 2.1/4 household rating, 3.20 million viewers and a 1.0/4 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 2.3/5 HH rating [#5]
    • 3.30M viewers [#5]
    • 1.0/4 A18-49 rating [#4]
  • 8:00 p.m.: A repeat of Bones (2.2/4 HH rating, 3.29M viewers, 1.0/4 A18-49 rating). 2.5/5 3.47 1.0/4
  • 9:00 p.m.: And the series finale of Standoff (2.2/4 HH rating, 3.10M viewers, 1.0/4 A18-49 rating) got only a tiny bounce, up by 120,000 viewers or 4%, 5% among households and 11% among adults 18-49.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 2.1/4 to 2.2/4
      • Viewers – 2.98M to 3.10M
      • Adults 18-49 – 0.9/3 to 1.0/4

Note: Network average numbers from the week prior are based on fast national data. Comparison’s from the week prior (or episode-to-episode, etc.) on specific shows are based on final national data. Ratings for the current day are based on fast nationals. (Expect all three scenarios to be the case at all times, unless otherwise noted). The final rating for first-run episodes that aired this evening will be reported the following week. So for example, the final rating for tonights episode of “20/20” will be reported in next weeks report for Friday, July 27, 2007.

Also keep in mind that because these are fast national ratings, numbers may increase or decrease when the final nationals are released.

  • A number of people have reported that Jericho was pre-empted in their area by a movie. The more I learn about Nielsen ratings the more I realize that no show is safe until major overhauls are done to the ratings system.
