Broadcast TV Ratings for Thursday, July 12, 2007

CBS and FOX split the winnings on Thursday night, with CBS taking households (just enough) and FOX taking viewers and adults 18-49. Good second outing for Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, making up for 5th Grader’s large decline. Big Brother 8 loses ground.

CBS finished in first place for the evening among households with a 5.4/10 rating, but was second among viewers with 7.85 million and among adults 18-49 with a 2.2/7 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • 4.8/9 HH rating [#2]
    • 7.28M viewers [#2]
    • 2.4/8 A18-49 rating [#2]
  • 8:00 p.m.: After an already weak premiere Big Brother 8 (4.2/8 HH rating, 6.11M viewers, 2.2/8 A18-49 rating) took another dive last night, dropping by 1.29 million viewers (17%), 12.5% by households and 19% among adults 18-49. These low ratings aren’t entirely unexpected, since the series has been undergoing a constant and steady decline in ratings over the past few seasons. It’s not good to be the lowest rated program on a network for an evening, when the other two programs are repeats. It’s simple as that.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 4.8/9 to 4.2/8
      • Viewers – 7.40M to 6.11M
      • Adults 18-49 – 2.7/9 to 2.2/8
  • As noted above, the rest of the evening for CBS was filled with repeats of CSI and Shark. Both shows performed very well given their repeat nature, especially CSI (always repeats well) which was nearly the evenings most-watched program among viewers, and actually was the most-watched program among households.
  • 9:00 p.m.: A repeat of CSI (6.4/12 HH rating, 9.26M viewers, 2.4/8 A18-49 rating).
    • Last week’s numbers (Pirate Master):
      • Households – 3.3/6
      • Viewers – 5.09M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.8/5
  • 10:00 p.m.: A repeat of Shark (5.7/10 HH rating, 8.18M viewers, 2.0/6 A18-49 rating).

Fox followed in second place for the evening among households with a 5.3/10 rating, but was a stronger first among viewers with 8.48 million and among adults 18-49 with a 3.0/10 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • 5.1/9 HH rating [#1]
    • 8.16M viewers [#1]
    • 2.6/8 A18-49 rating [#1]
  • 8:00 & 8:30 p.m.: A half-hour edition of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (4.3/8 HH rating, 6.82M viewers, 2.5/8 A18-49 rating) led into a new episode of Don’t Forget the Lyrics! (5.0/9 HH rating, 8.14M viewers, 2.7/10 A18-49 rating) started off the winning FOX night. First thing worth noting was 5th Grader? returned very poorly with an original episode. The surprise hit was off by a disturbing 2.5 million viewers (27%), 25% among households and 17% among adults 18-49. It remains to be seen what the reason for the drastic loss of viewership was. But there was good news for Fox as Don’t Forget the Lyrics! was able to build very nicely from its lead-in (1.32 million viewers or 16%, 19% among households and 8% among adults 18-49). It also stayed consistent with its series premiere on Wednesday (full numbers below), with 100% retention among households and 98% retention among viewers. It did however dip somewhat considerably among adults 18-49, losing about 21% of that key audience. Still though, a 2.7 in that demo is a very solid number.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (‘5th Grader’ on June 28, 2007 from 8:00-9:00 p.m.):
      • Households – 5.7/11 to 4.3/8
      • Viewers – 9.32M to 6.82M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.0/10 to 2.5/8
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (‘Lyrics’ on July 11, 2007 from 9:30-10:00 p.m.):
      • Households – 5.0/9 to 5.0/9
      • Viewers – 8.28M to 8.14M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.4/10 to 2.7/10
  • 9:00 p.m.: Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (5.8/10 HH rating, 9.49M viewers, 3.6/11 A18-49 rating) was unfazed by its week layoff, growing among households and most especially among adults 18-49 (+6%). It was the evenings most-watched program among viewers and adults 18-49.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (So You Think You Can Dance? – June 28, 2007):
      • Households – 5.9/10 to 5.8/10
      • Viewers – 9.39M to 9.49M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.4/10 to 3.6/11

NBC finished tied for third among households with a 2.5/4 rating, but was alone in third among viewers with 3.74 million and among adults 18-49 with a 1.6/5 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • 2.4/4 HH rating [#4]
    • 3.50M viewers [#4]
    • 1.4/4 A18-49 rating [#3]
  • NBC programmed its usual mix of Thursday night comedies. Of note, the network added an additional hour of repeats in the 10:00 p.m. hour, opting to go that route instead of airing E.R., which repeats poorly. The result was a very solid boost (+45%) among adults 18-49.
  • 8:00 & 8:30 p.m.: Back-to-back repeats of My Name is Earl (2.8/5 HH rating, 4.31M viewers, 1.6/6 A18-49 rating).
  • 9:00 & 9:30 p.m.: A repeat of The Office (2.6/5 HH rating, 3.98M viewers, 1.8/6 A18-49 rating) and Scrubs (2.2/4 HH rating, 3.27M viewers, 1.5/4 A18-49 rating).
  • 10:00 & 10:30 p.m.: More repeats of The Office (2.4/4 HH rating, 3.62M viewers, 1.8/6 A18-49 rating) and Scrubs (1.9/4 HH rating, 2.92M viewers, 1.4/5 A18-49 rating).

ABC followed tied for third among households with a 2.5/5 rating, but was fourth among both viewers (3.36 million) and adults 18-49 (1.1/4 rating).

  • Last Week:
    • 3.0/6 HH rating [#3]
    • 4.21M viewers [#3]
    • 1.3/4 A18-49 rating [#4]
  • ABC got fairly weak performances across the entire evening, with no show able to crack the 4 million mark and each just barely drawing a rating higher than a 1.0 among adults 18-49.
  • 8:00 p.m.: A repeat of Ugly Betty (2.6/5 HH rating, 3.55M viewers, 1.0/4 A18-49 rating).
  • 9:00 p.m.: A repeat of Grey’s Anatomy (2.4/4 HH rating, 3.17M viewers, 1.2/4 A18-49 rating).
  • 10:00 p.m.: And a repeat of Men in Trees (2.4/4 HH rating, 3.35M viewers, 1.0/3 A18-49 rating).

The CW was left then in fifth place earning a 1.2/2 household rating, 1.78 million viewers and a 0.6/2 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 1.3/2 HH rating [#5]
    • 1.96M viewers [#5]
    • 0.8/2 A18-49 rating [#5]
  • I guess nobody likes to watch repeats of The CW programs. Another weak evening for the new network.
  • 8:00 p.m.: A repeat of Smallville (1.3/2 HH rating, 1.82M viewers, 0.6/2 A18-49 rating).
  • 9:00 p.m.: Supernatural (1.2/2 HH rating, 1.74M viewers, 0.7/2 A18-49 rating).

Note: Network average numbers from the week prior are based on fast national data. Comparison’s from the week prior (or episode-to-episode, etc.) on specific shows are based on final national data. Ratings for the current day are based on fast nationals. (Expect all three scenarios to be the case at all times, unless otherwise noted). The final rating for first-run episodes that aired this evening will be reported the following week. So for example, the final rating for tonights episode of “So You Think You Can Dance?” will be reported in next weeks report for Thursday, July 19, 2007.

Also keep in mind that because these are fast national ratings, numbers may increase or decrease when the final nationals are released.
