Weekend Box Office — May 18-20, 2007

Shrek the Third claimed the top spot for the weekend, with a better than expected take of $121.63M from 4,122 theaters. Well outpacing the first weekend total for the previous two Shrek films.

The film took in an additional $907,000 from Thursday sneak peaks. As noted in the introduction, Shrek the Third beat Shrek ($42.35M) and Shrek 2 ($108.04M) by comfortable margins.

Considering its family friendly appeal, the film has a very good chance at surpassing the record for biggest second weekend (currently held by Shrek 2 — $71.42M -37.8% drop).

It stands as the third largest domestic weekend total of all time (behind Spider-Man 3 — $151.12M and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest — $135.63M).

There were no other new films opening wide in the charts for this weekend.

Moving elsewhere in the chart, Spider-Man 3 dipped 50.1% to second place in its third weekend, taking in $29.02M from 4,324 theaters. Noteworthy, was the addition of 72 theaters to the already widely circulated film. Its domestic total now stands at $282.38M through 17 days of release.
