CBS manages to take the second Thursday of May sweeps among households and viewers, while ABC manages to overcome the network for first among adults 18-49.

CBS finished in first place for the evening with a 9.4/15 household rating and 15.09 million viewers, but had to settle for second among adults 18-49 with a 4.4/12 rating .

  • Last Week:
    • 9.4/16 HH rating [#2]
    • 15.09M viewers [#2]
    • 4.4/12 A18-49 rating [#2]
  • 8:00 p.m.: Survivor: Fiji (8.5/15 HH rating, 13.64M viewers, 4.3/14 A18-49 rating) held firm week-to-week, giving CBS another easy 8:00 p.m., thanks to weakened competition in the hour.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 8.2/14 to 8.5/15
      • Viewers – 13.74M to 13.64M
      • Adults 18-49 – 4.6/14 to 4.3/14
  • 9:00 p.m.: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (12.0/19 HH rating, 18.60M viewers, 5.4/14 A18-49 rating) fell yet again, this time hitting below the 19M mark.  All things considered, this is still a very strong rating for the show, but it’s well before the same timeframe last season, when the show averaged a much more potent 15.8/24 HH rating, 25.40M viewers and an 8.3/21 rating among adults 18-49.  Yes, the competition from ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy has really hurt the show.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 11.7/18 to 12.0/19
      • Viewers – 19.02M to 18.60M
      • Adults 18-49 – 5.6/14 to 5.4/14
  • 10:00 p.m.: Airing in a special time, CBS broadcast the season finale of Without A Trace (9.9/17 HH rating, 14.39M viewers, 3.9/11 A18-49 rating) and it benefited from a slight bump compared to the last newly aired episode of the show, which aired this past Sunday.  Growth was most present among adults 18-49, where the show increased by 5%.  Having said that though, last season’s finale was much stronger as you can see from the numbers below. Year-to-year (based on the finale), the series was down 5.42M viewers, 24% among households and 35% among adults 18-49.  Retention was very similar to last season, so the decline can most likely solely be attributed to the fading CSI.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (Sunday, 5/6/2007):
      • Households – 9.6/16 to 9.9/17
      • Viewers – 14.71M to 14.39M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.7/10 to 3.9/11
    • Season finale comparison (Thursday, 5/18/2006):
      • Households – 13.0/21 to 9.9/17
      • Viewers – 19.81M to 14.39M
      • Adults 18-49 -6.0/16 to 3.9/11
    • Last week’s numbers (Shark–season finale):
      • Households – 8.2/13
      • Viewers – 12.50M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.1/8

ABC followed in second place for the evening with an 8.5/14 household rating and 12.45 million viewers, but took first place among adults 18-49 with a 4.7/14 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • 11.3/18 HH rating [#1]
    • 17.71M viewers [#1]
    • 7.3/20 A18-49 rating [#1]
  • 8:00 p.m.: Ugly Betty (6.6/11 HH rating, 9.99M viewers, 2.9/9 A18-49 rating) failed to capitilize on last week’s “better than they have been lately” ratings, dipping down below the 10M viewer mark and the 3.0 mark.  The show lost 690,000 viewers, 7% of its households, and most important to note, 19% of its A18-49 audience.  The weak A18-49 number meant an uncharacteristic 4th place finish in the demo for the hour.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 7.1/12 to 6.6/11
      • Viewers – 10.68M to 9.99M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.6/11 to 2.9/9
  • 9:00 p.m.: Grey’s Anatomy (12.8/20 HH rating, 19.07M viewers, 7.5/20 A18-49 rating) also suffered from a weakly decline, after a strong two-hour showing last week due to the special event.  It did well enough among households, where it only dipped 4%, but it lost a more significant 2.16M viewers and 18% among A18-49.
    • Week-to-week numbers (vs. 9:00-11:00 p.m.):
      • Households – 13.4/22 to 12.8/20
      • Viewers – 21.23M to 19.07M
      • Adults 18-49 – 9.1/24 to 7.5/20
  • 10:00 p.m.: A special preview of the pilot episode of Traveler (6.1/11 HH rating, 8.88M viewers, 3.6/10 A18-49 rating) didn’t get off to a very good start, which is unfortunate because I thought this was one of ABC’s strongest pilots.  The show had horrible retention rates: 48% among households, 47% among viewers and 48% among adults 18-49.  Having a two-week window between now and the show’s time period debut on May 30th isn’t going to help things.  It appears now, more than ever, that this is just going to be a summer burn off.  Shame, because the show does have potential.

Fox finished in third place for the evening with a 5.5/9 household rating and 8.80 million viewers, but was fourth among adults 18-49 with a 3.0/9 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • 4.1/7 HH rating [#4]
    • 6.59M viewers [#4]
    • 2.4/7 A18-49 rating [#4]
  • 8:00 p.m.: Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (5.7/10 HH rating, 8.99M viewers, 3.0/10 A18-49 rating) held steady, but like I’ve said in the past, is no longer a dominant force.  As it is now, it’s just a decent, solid hour for FOX on a night they’ve had trouble with in the past.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 5.4/9 to 5.7/10
      • Viewers – 9.02M to 8.99M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.1/9 to 3.0/10
  • 9:00 p.m.: Another hour of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (5.4/9 HH rating, 8.61M viewers, 2.9/8 A18-49 rating) didn’t improve any from the first hour, dipping just a tad across the board.
    • Last week’s numbers (Trading Spouses):
      • Households – 2.8/4
      • Viewers – 4.15M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.7/4

NBC followed in fourth place for the evening with a 4.8/8 household rating and 7.41 million viewers, but managed a second place finish among adults 18-49 with a 3.4/10 rating among.

  • Last Week:
    • 4.4/7 HH rating [#3]
    • 6.82M viewers [#3]
    • 3.1/9 A18-49 rating [#3]
  • This section will be updated with final national when those numbers are released.
  • 8:00 & 8:42 p.m.: Extended editions of My Name Is Earl (4.6/8 HH rating, 6.94M viewers, 3.0/10 A18-49 rating) and The Office (4.3/7 HH rating, 7.17M viewers, 3.9/11 A18-49 rating) stayed relatively consistent week-to-week.  The Office was the better performer of the two though, with My Name Is Earl continuing to slowly erode.  It’s quite strange what has happened to this hour of comedy.  In the past, 9-10M viewers was the norm.  No longer.
    • Week-to-week numbers (My Name Is Earl):
      • Households – 4.8/8 to 4.6/8
      • Viewers – 7.57M to 6.94M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.2/10 to 3.0/10
    • Week-to-week numbers (The Office):
      • Households – 4.3/7 to 4.3/7
      • Viewers – 6.99M to 7.17M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.6/10 to 3.9/11
  • 9:23 p.m.: Scrubs (3.4/5 HH rating, 5.31M viewers, 2.9/7 A18-49 rating) lost a bit of steam from its lead-in, but did bump back over the 5M mark and give an okay performance among adults 18-49.
    • Week-to-week numbers (vs. 9:19 to 9:53 p.m.):
      • Households – 3.2/5 to 3.4/5
      • Viewers – 4.95M to 5.31M
      • Adults 18-49 – 2.6/7 to 2.9/7
  • 10:01 p.m.: Boy, what a difference reduced competition in the hour makes huh? E.R. (6.3/11 HH rating, 9.39M viewers, 3.8/11 A18-49 rating), not having to go up against Grey’s Anatomy this week, climbed up nicely, growing by 1.20M viewers, 24% among households and 23% among adults 18-49.  Still nowhere near as strong as it was in the past, but much more respectable.
    • Week-to-week numbers (vs. 9:53 – 11:00 p.m.):
      • Households – 5.1/8 to 6.3/11
      • Viewers – 7.78M to 9.39M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.1/8 to 3.8/11

The CW was left then in fifth place earning a 2.0/3 household rating, 3.10 million viewers and a 1.3/4 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 2.0/3 HH rating [#5]
    • 3.35M viewers [#5]
    • 1.4/4 A18-49 rating [#5]
  • 8:00 p.m.: Smallville (2.2/4 HH rating, 3.36M viewers, 1.3/4 A18-49 rating) continues its below par numbers.  For whatever reason, the show is struggling (which as you can tell by now, seems to be a trend for all of television this season).  It dipped another 230,000 viewers and 13% among A18-49.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 2.1/4 to 2.2/4
      • Viewers – 3.59M to 3.36M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.5/4 to 1.3/4
  • 9:00 p.m.: Supernatural (1.8/3 HH rating, 2.84M viewers, 1.2/3 A18-49 rating) also took a slight hit, losing 270,000 viewers and 8% among A18-49.  Having said that though, retention out of its lead-in was actually pretty good (82% among households, 85% among viewers and 92% among A18-49).
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 1.8/3 to 1.8/3
      • Viewers – 3.11M to 2.84M
      • Adults 18-49 – 1.3/3 to 1.2/3

Note: Comparison’s from the week prior (or episode-to-episode, etc.) are based on final nationals. Ratings for the current day are based on fast nationals, unless otherwise noted. The final rating for episodes that aired this evening will be reported the following week. So for example, the final rating for tonights episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” will be reported in next weeks report for Thursday, May 17, 2007.

Also keep in mind that because these are fast national ratings, numbers may increase or decrease when the final nationals are released.
