Fox Pictures have announced a spin-off for the the popular X-Men film franchise, focused around Magneto.
The 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios collaboration will be directed by David Goyer. Magneto is the second announced spin-off from the successful X-Men films, the other being Wolverine which will star Hugh Jackman. That film doesn’t yet have a director set.
First details of the film are that it will be an origin story, likely with limited participation from McKellen.
The basic story involves Magneto coming to grips with his mutant ability, which allows him to manipulate metal objects, while he and his parents are locked away and trying to survive Auschwitz. He meets and befriends Professor Xavier when the later is a soldier liberating the concentration camp.
Magneto uses his abilities to hunt down and kill Nazi war criminals who tortured him. It’s this vengeance which turn Xavier and Magneto into enemies. Both characters will be played by actors in their 20’s.
