Broadcast TV Ratings for Monday, March 19, 2007

The return of Dancing with the Stars gives ABC a much needed boost on Monday night.

ABC finished in first place for the evening with a 10.8/17 household rating, 16.90 million viewers and a 5.2/13 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 4.3/7 HH rating [#4]
    • 6.31M viewers [#4]
    • 2.6/7 A18-49 rating [#4]
  • 8:00 p.m.: The special two-hour premiere of Dancing with the Stars (13.7/21 HH rating, 21.65M viewers, 6.3/16 A18-49 rating) returned with strong numbers improving upon the last season premiere by a solid 1.43M viewers, 3% among households and 11% among total viewers. The program grew each half-hour, peaking in its final half-hour with a 14.8/22 HH rating, 23.24M viewers and a 6.9/16 among adults 18-49.
    • Season Premiere numbers (Season 3 premiere — Tuesday, 9/12/2006):
      • Households – 13.3/21 to 13.7/21
      • Viewers – 20.22M to 21.65M
      • Adults 18-49 – 5.7/16 to 6.3/16
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (Season 3 finale — Wednesday, 11/15/2006):
      • Households – 17.7/27 to 13.7/21
      • Viewers – 27.51M to 21.65M
      • Adults 18-49 – 7.1/18 to 6.3/16
  • 10:00 p.m.: With the added help from a lead-in of ‘Dancing’, What About Brian (5.2/9 HH rating, 7.38M viewers, 2.8/8 A18-49 rating) managed to grow nicely from last week’s performance (+2.58M viewers, +53% among households and +27% among adults 18-49), but retention was fairly awful at 38% among households, 34% among viewers and 44% among adults 18-49. There was also a steep decline in the half-hour, as the show went from a 6.3/10 to a 4.1/7 HH rating/share (-35%), 8.98M to 5.79M viewers (-36%) and from a 3.3/8 to a 2.3/7 A18-49 rating/share (-30%). So though numbers were above where they have been of late, the severe declines are very discouraging and unless things change drastically next week, the show almost certainly will not be back. I’d love to be proven wrong though, as its a series that I continue to enjoy and would love to see around longer.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 3.4/6 to 5.2/9
      • Viewers – 4.80M to 7.38M
      • A18-49 – 2.2/6 to 2.8/8

CBS followed in second place for the evening with a 7.7/12 household rating and 11.70 million viewers, but was third among adults 18-49 with a 3.9/10 rating.

  • Last Week:
    • 7.5/12 HH rating [#2]
    • 11.43M viewers [#2]
    • 3.7/10 A18-49 rating [#3]
  • 8:00 PM and 8:30 p.m.: How I Met Your Mother (5.0/8 HH rating, 7.53M viewers, 2.9/8 A18-49 rating) & The New Adventures of Old Christine (4.7/7 HH rating, 6.86M viewers, 2.5/7 A18-49 rating) took a bit of a hit against ABCs Dancing, with both shows down from their last newly aired episodes. It’s also worth nothing just how poorly ‘Christine’ is doing in its new time slot. It seems like the show was pretty much dependent on its Two and a Half Men lead-in.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (How I Met Your Mother — 2/26/2007):
      • Households – 5.8/9 to 5.0/8
      • Viewers – 9.33M to 7.53M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.6/10 to 2.9/8
    • Week-to-week numbers (The New Adventures of Old Christine):
      • Households – 5.5/9 to 4.7/7
      • Viewers – 8.35M to 6.86M
      • Adults 18-49 – 2.9/8 to 2.5/7
  • 9:00 PM and 9:30 p.m.: Two and a Half Men (7.6/11 HH rating, 11.62M viewers, 4.0/10 A18-49 rating) was followed by Rules of Engagement (6.0/9 HH rating, 9.32M viewers, 3.6/8 A18-49 rating) were also affected by ‘Dancing’ with both shows down episode-to-episode by a fairly large amount, especially Two and a Half Men which was hit with declines of 4.96M viewers, 27% among households and 26% among adults 18-49.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (Two and a Half Men — 2/26/2007):
      • Households – 10.4/15 to 7.6/11
      • Viewers – 16.58M to 11.62M
      • Adults 18-49 – 5.4/13 to 4.0/10
    • Week-to-week numbers (Rules of Engagement)
      • Households – 7.4/11 to 6.0/9
      • Viewers – 11.47M to 9.32M
      • Adults 18-49 – 4.3/11 to 3.6/8
  • 10:00 p.m.: Returning from hiatus was CSI: Miami (11.5/19 HH rating, 17.43M viewers, 5.3/14 A18-49 rating) which had no problem taking the 10 p.m. hour as its return was on par with its last outing. It was CBSs #1 show for the evening.

      • Households – 11.1/18 to 11.5/19

      • Adults 18-49 – 5.6/15 to 5.3/14

    • 13.36M viewers [#1]
    • 4.0/11 A18-49 rating [#t1]
  • 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.: A two-hour edition of Deal or No Deal (8.7/14 HH rating, 14.05M viewers, 4.2/11 A18-49 rating) also took a bit of a hit airing against ‘Dancing’ though it still performed solidly for the network and rebounded some in its second hour.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 10.1/16 to 8.7/14
      • Viewers – 16.67M to 14.05M
      • A18-49 – 4.7/13 to 4.2/11
  • 10:00 p.m.: The Black Donnelly’s (3.9/6 HH rating, 5.83M viewers, 2.4/6 A18-49 rating) went further down, making prospects for a full season order low. The series was down 920,000 viewers, 18% among households and 8% among adults 18-49.

    • 11.37M viewers [#3]
    • 4.4/11 A18-49 rating [#2]
  • 8:00 p.m.: Returning from a brief one-week break was Prison Break (5.3/8 HH rating, 8.26M viewers, 3.5/10 A18-49 rating) and the show took a bit of a hit, dipping 1.46M viewers, 12% among households and 10% among adults 18-49.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (3/5/2007):
      • Households – 6.0/9 to 5.3/8
      • Viewers – 9.72M to 8.26M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.9/10 to 3.5/10
    • Week-to-week time slot numbers (vs. a repeat of House):
      • Households – 6.2/10 to 5.3/8
      • Viewers – 9.69M to 8.26M
      • A18-49 – 3.5/10 to 3.5/10

      • Viewers – 12.32M to 11.88M
      • Adults 18-49 – 4.5/11 to 4.7/11

The CW was left for a fifth place finish with a 1.5/2 household rating, 2.34 million viewers and a 1.0/2 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 1.3/2 HH rating [#5]
    • 1.92M viewers [#5]
    • 0.8/2 A18-49 rating [#5]
  • After many weeks of repeats, The CW finally returned to new episodes on Monday night and the results were embarrassingly poor.
  • 8:00 and 8:30 p.m.: Everybody Hates Chris (1.7/3 HH rating, 2.66M viewers, 1.1/3 A18-49 rating) and All of Us (1.6/2 HH rating, 2.46M viewers, 1.0/2 A18-49 rating) were down and even with prior installments, with neither show able to even come near 3M viewers.
