ABC and Kimmel Close To New Deal

According to Broadcasting & Cable, ABC and Jimmy Kimmel are close to signing a multi-year extension which will keep Kimmel with the network (and the network in the late-night market) past the 2009 season.

His current deal only keeps him signed through the 2008 season.

Though the late-night show still does not operate at a profit for ABC, they are happy with its growth (up 17% among adults 18-49 and 13% among total viewers season-to-date) to stick with it.

“We all feel like we’re growing this thing,” says ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson. “He wants us to bet on him, and we want to bet on him, so now we are moving forward.”

“We’ve invested a lot in building him,” McPherson says. “It would be silly to spend the money and then say goodbye or get caught with our pants down.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live airs weeknights from 12:05 to 1:05 a.m.
