Broadcast TV Ratings for Wednesday, January 3, 2007

Fox takes the night with its best ratings yet from a BCS bowl. Friday Night Lights doesn’t improve in its new timeslot, while the premieres of Knights of Prosperity and In Case of Emergency perform only decently. Beauty and the Geek does very well for The CW.

Fox finished in first place for the evening with a 9.0/14 household rating, 14.04 million total viewers and a 4.9/14 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • Households – 4.3/7 rating [#2]
    • Viewers – 6.61 million [#2]
    • A18-49 – 2.1/6 rating [#3]
  • 8:00 PM: Leading off the evening for Fox was a BCS Bowl Preview (7.2/11 HH rating, 11.2M viewers, 3.5/9 A18-49) special.
  • 8:30 to 11:00 PM: Fox then got their best BCS game performance thus far from the Sugar Bowl: LSU vs. Notre Dame (9.3/15 HH rating, 14.6M viewers, 5.2/13 A18-49). It was the nights highest rated program among households, total viewers and adults 18-49. These numbers are slightly up from last year’s Sugar Bowl between Georgia and West Virginia which aired on ABC. (Numbers for last year’s game are from 8:49 PM – 12:46 AM).
    • Year-to-year numbers (January 2, 2006)
      • Households – 9.0/15 to 9.3/15
      • Viewers – 13.6M to 14.6M
      • A18-49 – 4.8/13 to 5.2/13

CBS followed in second place for the evening with a 6.9/11 household rating, 10.30 million total viewers and a 3.2/8 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • Households –6.2/11 rating [#1]
    • Viewers –9.63 million [#1]
    • A18-49 –2.8/8 rating [#1]
  • 8:00 & 8:30 PM: Leading off for The Eye was the networks only new show for the evening, The King of Queens (5.6/9 HH rating, 8.62M viewers, 2.9/8 A18-49 rating) which was followed by a repeat of Two and a Half Men (5.6/9 HH rating, 8.48M viewers, 2.8/7 A18-49 rating).
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (The King of Queens — 12/20/2006):
      • Households – 5.5/9 to 5.6/9
      • Viewers – 8.29M to 8.62M
      • A18-49 – 2.8/9 to 2.9/8
  • 9:00 PM: A repeat of Criminal Minds (7.9/12 HH rating, 11.94M viewers, 3.5/9 A18-49 rating) proved strong enough for a second place finish on the hour among households, total viewers and adults 18-49, holding off a new Deal or No Deal on NBC.
  • 10:00 PM: Ending the evening for CBS was another repeat, this time of CSI: NY (7.1/12 HH rating, 10.41M viewers, 3.2/8 A18-49 rating) also second for the hour behind the Sugar Bowl on Fox, easily taking care of new offerings from ABC and NBC.

NBC finished in third place for the evening with a 5.9/9 household rating, 8.98 million total viewers and a 3.0/8 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • Households – 2.5/4 rating [#2]
    • Viewers – 3.51 million [#2]
    • A18-49 – 1.2/3 rating [#2]
  • 8:00 PM: Premiering in its new Wednesday night timeslot was Friday Night Lights (4.3/7 HH rating, 6.27M viewers, 2.3/6 A18-49 rating) which unfortunately (this is a favorite series of mine) did not show much improvement over its Tuesday night airings. I commend NBC for sticking with the show and doing all they can to get a larger audience watching, but barring a miracle, it would appear the series will not get past its first season.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (Tuesday, 12/12/2006):
      • Households -4.0/6 to 4.3/7
      • Viewers – 5.66M to 6.27M
      • A18-49 – 2.3/6 to 2.3/6
  • 9:00 PM: Though it improved upon its lead-in an impressive 5.08M viewers, 65% among households and 52% among adults 18-49 Deal or No Deal (7.1/11 HH rating, 11.35M viewers, 3.5/9 A18-49 rating) could only manage a third place finish for the hour, due to the strong showing from the Sugar Bowl on Fox and a repeat of Criminal Minds on CBS.
  • 10:00 PM: Another returning program, Medium (6.3/10 HH rating, 9.33M viewers, 3.3/8 A18-49 rating) was down from where it left off three weeks ago (most importantly in the A18-49 demo), but was still a solid second place for the hour behind Fox’s Sugar Bowl.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (12/13/2006):
      • Households -6.5/11 to 6.3/10
      • Viewers – 9.96M to 9.33M
      • A18-49 – 3.7/10 to 3.3/8

ABC followed in fourth place for the evening with a 4.1/6 household rating, 6.35 million total viewers and a 2.5/7 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • Households – 3.9/7 rating [#3]
    • Viewers – 5.87 million [#3]
    • A18-49 – 2.2/6 rating [#2]
  • 8:00 & 8:30 PM: The season premiere of According to Jim (4.7/7 HH rating, 7.35M viewers, 2.5/7 A18-49 rating) which was followed by another new episode (4.5/7 HH rating, 7.20M viewers, 2.7/7 A18-49 rating) gave a so-so performance for ABC.
  • 9:00 & 9:30 PM: That hour led into the series premieres of Knights of Prosperity (4.4/7 HH rating, 7.18M viewers, 3.0/7 A18-49 rating) and In Case of Emergency (3.9/6 HH rating, 6.29M viewers, 2.7/7 A18-49 rating) which didn’t make much of a dent into their competition. Considering all the press KOP has been getting leading up to its premiere, this is a disappointing ratings figure for the show. The only positive was the consistency of the night overall for the Alphabet. Nothing outstanding, but the new comedies aren’t dead quite yet.
  • 10:00 PM: A one hour edition of Primetime (3.5/6 HH rating, 5.03M viewers, 2.1/6 A18-49 rating) ended the eveing for ABC. As you can see from the numbers below, Primetime’s ratings have gone up and down the past few weeks.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 3.3/6 to 5.1/9 to 3.5/6
      • Viewers – 4.75M to 7.71M to 5.03M
      • A18-49 – 1.7/5 to 3.0/9 to 2.1/6

The CW finished in fifth place with a 3.0/5 household rating, 4.90 million total viewers and a 2.2/6 rating among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • Households – 1.0/2 rating [#5]
    • Viewers – 1.45 million [#5]
    • A18-49 – 0.6/2 rating [#5]
  • 8:00 to 10:00 PM: The two hour season premiere of Beauty and the Geek (3.0/5 HH rating, 4.90M viewers, 2.2/6 A18-49 rating) gave The CW a much needed boost for the new season. The program peaked in its second hour, earning a 3.2/5 HH rating, 5.30M viewers and a 2.5/6 A18-49 rating. The program was virtually even from its second season premiere last year (check numbers below):
    • Season premiere comparison (January 12, 2006 on The WB–1 hour):
      • Households – 3.1/5 to 3.0/5
      • Viewers – 4.95M to 4.90M
