Broadcast TV Ratings for Sunday, November 5, 2006

NBC takes the evening in households, viewers and adults 18-49 on the strength of its “Sunday Night Football” presentation, while ABC and CBS stay competitive. “Desperate Housewive” was the most watched program on the night.

NBC finished in first place with an 11.7/18 HH rating (18.40M viewers), and a 7.1/17 A18-49 rating.

  • Last Week’s Numbers:
    • 9.2/14 HH rating [#3]
    • 13.36M viewers [#3]
    • 5.2/13 A18-49 rating [#2]
  • At 7:00 PM “Football Night In America” (8.9/14 HH rating, 5.6/9 A18-49 rating) began the evening for NBC with a stronger than usual performance.
  • At 8:30 PM, “NBC Sunday Night Football: Indianapolis Colts at New England Patriots” (12.8/19 HH rating, 19.9M viewers, 7.8/18 A18-49 rating) turned in the highest rated performance for the program since the regular season launch, securing NBC the win on the night in households, viewers and adults 18-49.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 11.2/18 to 12.8/19
      • Viewers – 17.3M to 19.9
      • A18-49 – 6.8/15 to 7.8/18

ABC followed in second for the evening with a 9.7/15 HH rating (15.58M), and a 5.7/14 rating A18-49 rating.

  • Last Week’s Numbers:
    • 9.4/15 HH rating [#2]
    • 15.40M viewers [#1]
    • 5.4/14 A18-49 rating [#1]
  • At 7:00 PM, “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (6.5/11 HH rating, 10.75M viewers, 2.9/9 A18-49 rating) declined some week-to-week and was third for the time period.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 6.5/11 to 6.5/11
      • Viewers – 11.98M to 10.75M
      • A18-49 – 3.5/10 to 2.9/9
  • At 8:00 PM, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (8.9/13 HH rating, 15.31M viewers, 5.4/13 A18-49 rating) stayed relatively even from the week prior leading into the heavily promoted “Desperate Housewives”.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 9.1/14 to x 8.9/13
      • Viewers – 15.83M to 15.31M
      • A18-49 – 5.5/13 to 5.4/13
  • At 9:00 PM, “Desperate Housewives” (14.2/21 HH rating 22.54M viewers, 9.0/20 A18-49 rating) continued its slow climb upward in this heavily promoted and in my opinion very wonderfully executed episode. Its my personal opinion that after a good but lackluster second season, the ‘Wives’ are back in top form. The series held off a stronger than usual performance by NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” for a win on the evening in households, viewers and adults 18-49 according to preliminary fast national data.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 13.3/20 to 14.2/21
      • Viewers – 21.14M to 22.54M
      • A18-49 – 8.3/19 to 9.0/20
  • At 10:00 PM, “Brothers & Sisters” (9.2/15 HH rating, 13.73M viewers, 5.5/14 A18-49 rating) was boosted somewhat by its strong DH lead-in (7% in households, 8% in viewers and 10% in adults 18-49). Retention could obviously be better, as the show still struggles to hold onto more than 60-65% of its lead-in, but the show is holding steady unlike a few other new (and old) ABC shows this season.
    • Week-to-week numbers:
      • Households – 8.6/15 to 9.2/15
      • Viewers – 12.67M to 13.73M
      • A18-49 – 5.0/13 to 5.5/14

CBS finished in third for the evening with a 9.4/14 HH rating (14.43M) and a 4.1/10 A18-49 rating.

  • Last Week’s Numbers:
    • 9.7/15 HH rating [#1]
    • 14.97M viewers [#2]
    • 4.2/10 A18-49 rating [#3]
  • Note: NFL Overrun ran into about 30 minutes of CBS’s schedule so numbers will be slightly revised when finals are released. Analysis will be kept to a minimum.
  • At 7:00 PM, “60 Minutes” (10.4/16 HH rating, 15.7M viewers, 4.1/11 A18-49 rating) was the nights highest viewed program on the eye, most likely attributed to the late ending Steelers/Broncos match up.
  • At 8:00 PM, “The Amazing Race 10″ (8.3/14 HH rating, 12.0M viewers, 3.7/8 A18-49 rating) started off the main lineup of CBS’s Sunday primetime lineup.
  • At 9:00 PM, “Cold Case” (8.9/14 HH rating, 13.7M viewers, 3.7/8 A18-49 rating) grew from its lead-in in household and viewers.
  • At 10:00 PM, “Without a Trace” (8.6/14 HH rating, 12.8M viewers, 3.8/10 A18-49 rating) ended the evening for the eye behind NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” and ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters”.

FOX followed in fourth for the evening with a 4.5/7 HH rating (4.42M viewers) and a 3.5/9 A18-49 rating.

  • Last Week’s Numbers:
    • 2.8/4 HH rating [#4]
    • 4.42M viewers [#4]
    • 2.0/5 A18-49 rating [#4]
  • From 7:00 to 8:00 PM, two repeats of “The Simpsons” (3.8/6 HH rating, 6.15M viewers, 2.7/8 A18-49 rating) began the evening for FOX.
  • At 8:00 PM and 8:30 PM, new episodes of returning shows “The Simpsons” (6.0/9 HH rating, 10.43M viewers, 4.9/12 A18-49 rating) and “American Dad” (4.6/7 HH rating, 7.77M viewers, 3.7/8 A18-49 rating) provided good results for Fox as the network is coming out of a poor Fall season and hoping for things to change as we approach the Winter season.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (“The Simpsons” on 9/24/2006 – Finals):
      • Households – 5.8 to 6.0
      • Viewers – 9.72M to 10.43M
      • A18-49 – 5.1 to 4.9
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (“American Dad” on 9/24/2006 – Finals):
      • Households – 4.5 to 4.6
      • Viewers – 8.36M to 7.77M
      • A18-49 – 3.9 to 3.7
  • At 9:00 PM and 9:30 PM, more new episodes of returning shows “Family Guy” (5.0/7 HH rating, 8.46M viewers, 4.0/9 A18-49 rating) and “The War at Home” (3.9/6 HH rating, 6.23M viewers, 3.0/7 A18-49 rating) ended the evening for Fox. As you can see “The War at Home” continues to be the weak link in the line-up for the network but it was up slightly from its last newly aired episode.
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (“Family Guy” on 9/24/2006 – Finals):
      • Households – 5.0 to 5.0
      • Viewers – 9.66M to 8.46M
      • A18-49 – 4.4 to 4.0
    • Episode-to-episode numbers (“The War at Home” on 10/1/2006 – Finals):
      • Households – 3.5 to 3.9
      • Viewers – 5.59M to 6.23M
      • A18-49 – 2.7 to 3.0

The CW finished in fifth place with a 1.6/2 HH rating (2.29M viewers), and a 0.9/2 A18-49 rating.

  • Last Week’s Number’s:
    • 1.5/2 HH rating [#5]
    • 2.14M viewers [#5]
    • 0.8/2 A18-49 rating [#5]
  • At 7:00 PM, a repeat of “Supernatural” (1.1/2 HH rating, 1.67M viewers, 0.5/1 A18-49 rating) aired in a slot which The CW has yet to find a suitable lead-in to “7th Heaven”.
  • At 8:00 PM, a new “7th Heaven” (2.6/4 HH rating, 3.82M viewers, 1.4/3 A18-49 rating) showed strong gains thanks in part to a more heavily focused promotion by The CW.
    • Week-to-week Numbers:
      • Households – 2.1/3 to x 2.6/4
      • Viewers – 3.14M to 3.82M
      • A18-49 – 1.1/2 to 1.4/3
  • At 9:00 PM, a repeat of “America’s Next Top Model” (1.2/2 HH rating, 1.61M viewers, 0.7/2 A18-49 rating) ended off the evening for the network, with not very many viewers tuning in.
